Standard Form Worksheets

The expanded form question in reverse: each line gives the parts and asks for the number they add up to, so 4,000 + 300 + 20 + 1 is answered 4,321. It is the harder direction, because the student has to notice which column is missing rather than being shown it.

That is worth saying plainly: given 4,000 + 300 + 2, the answer is 4,302, and the nought in the tens place is not written anywhere in the question. Students who answer 4,32 have understood the addition and missed the place value.

Frequently asked questions

What is standard form?

The ordinary way of writing a number - 4,321 rather than 4,000 + 300 + 20 + 1. It is the answer to an expanded form written the other way round.

Why is this harder than expanded form?

An expanded form with a missing column gives no sign that the column is missing. Turning 4,000 + 300 + 2 back into 4,302 means noticing the empty tens place and writing the zero.

Can I mix this with the other place value questions?

Yes - the Place Value Worksheets page puts all three kinds on one sheet.

Is there an answer key?

Turn on Include Answer Pages and a matching key prints behind each worksheet page, with the questions in the same order.
